Thoughts From Naviter Wealth's
CEO, Bentley Blackmon

Many people think of “tax time” as the weeks leading up to April 15th—or for most of our clients, October 15th. While that is true, “tax planning time” is happening right now. The window of time from mid-October to mid-December is typically the best time for your tax accountant to focus on proactive and strategic planning. Use this time not just to handle year-end planning matters such as charitable gifting, utilizing annual gift tax exclusions, and funding retirement plans, but also consider tax strategies to implement next year.

As always, we are happy to coordinate these calls and participate in the discussions. Let us know if we can help.

Question: What’s a donor-advised fund?

Alecia Fisher Dougherty, CFP®:
A donor-advised fund is a private fund that is managed by a third party with the intention of overseeing charitable donations on behalf of individuals, families, or their entities. These funds have become an increasingly popular way for individuals and families to manage their charitable giving, and for good reason.

Two notable benefits of donor-advised funds are tax benefits and flexibility. When contributions are made to a DAF, they are tax-deductible for the year they are made. This allows donors to receive an immediate tax benefit, even if they choose not to disburse funds to charities right away. and, Donors have the freedom to make contributions to their DAF at any time and in any amount. They can also recommend grants to their preferred charities on their own timeline.
